Originating in the Middle Ages, the earliest
knot gardens formed structured patterns of
interwoven hedges, enclosed by a fragrant
planting of rosemary, marjoram, thyme, etc. The
spaces between were filled with herbs or coloured
gravel. Dwarf Box as an edging came into use in
the 17th century.
This Knot Garden is based on an English design
published in 1638, and features interlaced
patterns surrounded by lavender hedges. This
garden is shaded by a giant specimen of weeping
elm, certainly one of the Gardens' most
magnificent trees.
